Tertiary Education Commission

Senior university management typically comprises the vice chancellor as chief executive officer, from two to four deputy and pro vice chancellors variously responsible for planning and financial matters and academic matters of great importance to the university such as research and teaching, and one or two career managers responsible for academic administration and/or fabric and finance. Depending on the nature of the university and of particular appointments, deans and heads of key service units such as the library and information technology may also be members of senior management. The table taken below is taken from the Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee’s compilation of senior officers. There is considerable variation in the posts the universities list in the document, but it gives some idea of who universities consider to be their senior management.

Management styles differ between universities and managers, but senior management typically meets weekly as a group around an informal and loosely structured agenda. Unlike the governing and senior academic bodies which tend to consider much the same matters on an annual cycle, senior management is more likely to consider a few issues intensively for a month or so, and then move on to other issues of the day. So a press, government or internal report on an aspect of the university’s performance might be taken up by a member of senior management, which then develops a position over a couple of months. The position would then be presented to the university as an idea, recommendation or decision, depending on the issue and the custom of the university. Senior management would rarely assume responsibility for implementing the outcome – this is more likely to be the responsibility of a faculty, dean or manager of a service unit.
